WISDOM TEETH

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to develop and appear in the mouth. They usually appear during a person’s late teens or early twenties, which has been called the "age of wisdom". Thus, they are called wisdom teeth. The normal position of wisdom teeth is behind the upper and lower second, or 12-year, molars.

WHAT IS IMPACTED WISDOM TEETH?
For those of us who jaws are too small to accommodate these wisdom teeth, problems may arise.
Often, wisdom tooth is blocked from erupting or coming into the mouth normally. It may only partially impacted (grows in crooked and breaks through the gum only partially), or it may totally impacted (fail to break through at all).

How do I know I have wisdom teeth?
Ask your dentist about the positioning of your wisdom teeth. He or she may take an X-ray periodically to evaluate for the presence and alignment of your wisdom teeth. Your dentist may also decide to send you to an oral surgeon for further evaluation.
X-ray (OPG)

Useful of OPG:
  • show the presence of impacted teeth upper and lower teeth
  • reveal important surgical information like curved roots and the proximity of the tooth roots to nerves

Wisdom teeth can be damage without your knowing it because many problems with wisdom teeth can occur with few or no symptoms. Removal of it is easier in young people, when the wisdom teeth roots are not yet fully developed and the bone is less dense.

In addition, as people age there is an increased chance of the symptoms mentioned below and healing time tend to be longer. For these reasons, the surgeon may recommend the removal of wisdom teeth even if they are not yet causing obvious problems, particularly for young adults.

Why Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Impacted

Tooth decay

Cystic lesion
Pericoronitis

Facial swollen due to abscess

Abscess

Wisdom teeth are extracted because:

·         Impacted
·         Lack of space- They are trapped below the gum line
·         Pericoronitis- An infection has developed from trapped food, plaque and bacteria
·         Misalignment of the jaws- The way the teeth bite together has changed
·         Tooth decay- lacks proper hygiene because it is hard to reach
·         Abscess- infection of the tooth  due to advanced dental decay
·         Fluid filled sac- progressive cystic formation around the tooth
